Our Approach to Education.

Where every learner is understood and supported through personalized, multi-sensory teaching tailored to their strengths and pace.

OUR APPROACH

Education as Individual as Every Child.

Stephen Gaynor School realizes that every child is unique, and each child learns in a different way. For this reason, we develop an individualized, intellectually rich curriculum with multi-sensory techniques that fit the learning style of each and every child and are paced at their level.
Our dedicated faculty and in-house specialists help children master the strategies, communication skills, and study habits necessary to be successful. We believe it is important to provide this high level of support within a traditional school atmosphere during school hours so our students are prepared as they move ahead in their academic careers.

Gaynor has a team of in-house specialists who provide valuable support for our students. When needed, Gaynor specialists join a child in class or work with them one-on-one or in small-group instruction. Our team-based approach allows specialists and expert faculty to collaborate, ensuring each child’s needs are met. Gaynor specialists include professionals in Speech-Language Pathology, Reading, Math, and Occupational Therapy. In addition, Gaynor has an in-house psychology team.

Through this individualized, evidence-based approach, students in the Primary, Lower, Intermediate, and Upper Divisions grow not only in academic achievement but also in confidence, self-awareness, and a lifelong love of learning.

Individualized Curriculum

Gaynor’s academic program is both rigorous and responsive, tailored to each child’s learning profile. With small class sizes and two full-time teachers, instruction is personalized to help students build core skills while nurturing their confidence. Our curriculum draws from proven frameworks like Singapore Math®, Stern Structural Arithmetic, and The Hochman Writing Program, while ensuring that every lesson centers on the individual child. Across subjects — from reading and writing to science and social studies — teachers emphasize growth, connection, and curiosity.

Orton-Gillingham Approach

Since our founding in 1962, Gaynor has been deeply rooted in the Orton-Gillingham approach — a structured, multi-sensory method proven to help students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences become fluent, confident readers. Every teacher is trained in this evidence-based methodology, which uses sight, sound, touch, and movement to make literacy accessible for all learners. Gaynor’s OG program is officially accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators, one of only a few schools nationwide to hold this distinction.

Executive Function

Executive function skills — such as planning, organization, and self-regulation — are critical for lifelong learning and independence. At Gaynor, these skills are taught explicitly and integrated into daily classroom life from the Primary Division through the Upper Division. Students learn to set goals, manage materials, monitor their progress, and adapt to challenges using strategies like “Get Ready, Do, Done!” and the RULER Approach. By strengthening these cognitive and emotional tools, Gaynor students become more self-aware, confident, and capable learners.

Dedicated Specialists
and Therapists

What makes Gaynor truly exceptional is our team-based approach to supporting every learner. Our faculty includes Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Reading and Math Specialists, and School Psychologists who collaborate closely with teachers to provide individualized instruction and intervention. Whether working one-on-one, in small groups, or alongside classroom teachers, these professionals ensure that each child’s academic, social, and emotional needs are met within the rhythm of the school day.
