MIDDLE SCHOOL (AGES 11-14)

Becoming Independent,
Confident Learners.

The Middle School at Stephen Gaynor School empowers students to take greater ownership of their learning while preparing for the transition to high school. Students collaborate with teachers to set goals, reflect on progress, and advocate for themselves with growing confidence and independence.

Each student’s program is individually designed to challenge them academically and personally, while building the self-awareness, executive functioning, and study skills needed for long-term success.
“n our Middle School, we are not indebted to any one program or philosophy. We are indebted to the child and ensuring that their education is tailored to meet individual needs by building the specific skills needed to be successful. This allows our alumni to be prepared as they move forward on their academic path.”
— Christine Karamanoglou, Director of Middle School

THE INTERMEDIATE DIVISION PROGRAM

Individualized and Engaging Academics.

Instruction in literacy, math, and history continues to be tailored to each student’s strengths, learning style, and pace. Students work in small groups and one-on-one with teachers who emphasize mastery and confidence-building in every subject.

Core Curriculum

Reading

Reading groups are formed based on decoding and comprehension levels. Students continue Orton-Gillingham-based instruction with age-appropriate texts that expand vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Math

Students progress from foundational problem-solving to pre-algebra concepts, learning through small-group and individualized instruction. By teaching each math skill to mastery, students build confidence and prepare for high school-level coursework.

Writing

Building on Gaynor’s Writing Program, Middle School students take on more complex assignments, including research papers and persuasive essays. They develop personal systems for organizing ideas and expressing themselves clearly, preparing them for future academic writing.

Social Studies

Students explore world cultures and ancient civilizations, then progress to American history. Through projects and discussions, they learn how societies evolve and how historical themes connect to the present.

Science

The science curriculum includes biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science. Students engage in hands-on experiments, learn to write lab reports, and present scientific findings, culminating in an independent research project.

Exploration, Identity, and Leadership

Middle School students participate in electives that encourage exploration and self-expression, including clubs, project-based learning, and student advocacy initiatives. These courses promote creativity, curiosity, and collaboration while helping students discover personal interests.

Affinity groups offer students safe and supportive spaces to connect around shared identities and experiences. These groups nurture belonging, confidence, and leadership skills, fostering empathy and understanding within the broader school community.

Placement and Future Readiness

Gaynor’s Placement Program guides students and families through every step of the transition process. The dedicated Placement Office works closely with parents to identify the best-fit high schools, maintain clear expectations, and provide ongoing support.

Each graduate leaves Gaynor with the academic foundation, resilience, and confidence needed to thrive in their next school and beyond.
